Thursday 12th January 2012

Saturday 14th January 2012, Treyew Road, Kick-Off 3:00pm, Blue Square Bet South.

Manager Glenn Pennyfather will demand an immediate reaction from his City players this Saturday at Truro City (kick-off 3:00pm) to make sure they take full advantage of any more slip-ups by Woking as the Clarets continue to chase down the runaway Blue Square Bet South leaders at Treyew Road.

Pennyfather was disappointed his side fell to their first league defeat since 3rd September on the same day as The Cards suffered their own surprise loss last weekend and he’s determined not to allow that to happen again. Currently sitting in third place, Chelmsford intend to re-establish themselves as Woking’s main challengers as soon as they can.

But they face a tough task against Truro, one of only three teams to overcome them on the opening day with a 1-0 win, and a side who’ll be eager to register their own response to a 5-1 thrashing by Welling United in their last outing. The mid-table outfit have been hit-and-miss with their results so far, making Saturday’s match-up difficult to predict.

“Their position suggests they’re not a bad side,” Glenn claimed. “They’ve had well-documented off-field problems but, although they were beaten heavily by Welling, we had them watched for that game and the scoreline didn’t necessarily reflect the pattern of the match. They beat us on the first day with a hell of a goal and we’ll look to atone for that.”

Pennyfather was able to give match minutes to a number of his First and Reserve Team players during a friendly match at Canvey Island on Tuesday night where an experimental Clarets side went down 2-1, with striker Michael Bakare netting an excellent goal. Several individuals benefited from a full 90 minutes and Glenn said: “The challenge was spot-on. Players would always rather play than train and this was an important exercise.”

Two of those individuals were wingers Greg Morgan and Ricky Modeste, who came through the match with no reaction to their recent problems. They could potentially play some part in Truro. Fellow midfielder Tosan Popo is back from an illness and Warren Whitely has shaken off a knock, while an opportunity to get into the starting eleven arises through a suspension for Sam Corcoran, who would have missed out through injury regardless.

There has been good news this week as negotiations are almost complete with Charlton Athletic to extend the loan of youngster Popo for the rest of the season, progress which has given Glenn a substantial boost. Elsewhere Anthony Cook, who’s been out long-term with ligament damage, has emerged well from his operation this week and pleased his surgeons. He’ll now remain static for a fortnight before resuming his rehabilitation in six weeks.
