Saturday 28th January 2012, Park View Road, Kick-Off 3:00pm, Blue Square Bet South.
City’s Assistant Manager, Ben Chenery, has highlighted the “learning curve” Glenn Pennyfather’s young squad are experiencing and explained how the Clarets have put their last result behind them as they make the short trip across the River Thames to take on Welling United on Saturday, kick-off 3:00pm.
City went down to a single David Wheeler goal at home to Staines Town last Saturday but Chenery has witnessed in training how the squad have learned from it and moved on. Now they take on another side near the top of the table in Jamie Day’s Welling knowing how crucial it will be to bounce straight back. “I’ve seen them physically grow in confidence this season and this setback won’t affect that,” explained the former Football League defender.
“Training has been at a good tempo and we’ve ironed a few things out. Glenn and I are both naturally upbeat people and when we’ve had a bad result we assess it then quickly move on. That can get an extra 10% out of the players. These youngsters are only going to get better, and that means a positive future for Chelmsford City. Each loss is a learning curve and great footballers learn from their mistakes so they don’t make the same ones again.”
City and Welling are two of a small group chasing leaders Woking, and Ben added: “When we were nine points clear in 2009, everyone thought we were home and dry. Over Christmas someone reminded me of when Stevenage were eleven points behind the leaders and they fought back to win their league by eleven points themselves. We’ve got a lot of talent here and I honestly believe that, until it’s mathematically impossible, we’ve got a chance.”
Central defender Adam Tann is a serious doubt for the game after hobbling off the pitch with an injury late in the Staines encounter. Elsewhere, midfielder Sam Corcoran serves the third of his three-match suspension for a red card against Thurrock over the Christmas period. Both teams could jump up into second place with a victory at Park View Road.
