Match Centre News

Friday 21st October 2011

Saturday 22nd October 2011, Raymond McEnhill Stadium, Kick-Off 3:00pm, Blue Square Bet South.

Team spirit in the City dressing room is at an all-time high according to Manager Glenn Pennyfather as he prepares his squad for a difficult trip to face Salisbury City this Saturday, kick-off 3:00pm, and he wants that positive atmosphere to continue to be reflected in their Blue Square Bet South away results.

City have won four, drawn two and lost none of their matches on the road so far this season - an exact replica of Salisbury’s home record - so Pennyfather knows he will have to exploit every advantage he has at his disposal if he’s to bring the points back from Wiltshire. After an unusual but beneficial training session earlier in the week, his team are fully prepared.

“We had ‘spinning’ on Tuesday at Nuffield Health & Fitness and it was a really good, hard session for the players,” Glenn revealed. “They were constantly on the bike, with the instructor taking part alongside them and we’re very, very grateful as it will be really beneficial to us. It’s also great for team spirit, which is as high as it could be and we’re all like a big family.”

Spinning is a form of indoor cycling, with classes focusing on endurance, strength, intervals, high intensity and recovery, generally using specialized stationary bicycles. The features include a mechanical device to modify the difficulty of pedalling, specially shaped handlebars and multiple adjustment points to fit the bicycle to a range of riders.

The squad have also been tackling various sporting challenges after training too, with right-back Justin Miller being crowned the putting champion on Thursday evening when he took on his team mates at indoor golf! Last week it was young midfielder Max Cornhill who claimed the silverware in a table tennis tournament, but their serious football heads know they have a testing weekend ahead of them as Eastleigh also visit on Monday night.

Glenn added: “Salisbury are decent at home and we’ve got a very good away record, coming off the back of a good result at Lowestoft [5-2] last week, but this will be a completely different game. They’re full time so they should have the edge with fitness, but we’re very confident and have great team spirit. We want to go into our cup game next week with six points in the bag as it’ll be a great distraction but we don’t want to fall behind in the league.”

The Salisbury clash has been rated as “too soon” for skipper David Rainford to return from injury, while Anthony Cook is doubtful for the game wide in midfield. New striker Michael Bakare will be unavailable due to previously arranged personal commitments but there is better news relating to winger Greg Morgan, who is now available for selection. Midfielder Craig Parker is also recovering and will feature in the next Reserve Team outing.

Meanwhile, Glenn praised the club’s Under 18s, who were narrowly beaten in the FA Youth Cup in midweek. He said: “It’s always a bitter pill to swallow when you lose on penalties. It was a dull first half but livened up in the second and we gave a good account of ourselves against a strong, physical Tilbury side with a little bit more experience. Paul Nicholson has done a great job and maybe we’ll see players come through into the First Team in years to come.”
