Melbourne Stadium, Kick-Off 7:45pm, Blue Square Bet South.
Onlookers shouldn’t pay too much attention to league tables yet according to City Manager Glenn Pennyfather, who knows a win for his team in the Monday night fixture against Tonbridge Angels, kick-off 7:45pm at Melbourne Stadium, could put his Clarets team into the top four.
City won 2-1 at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday to keep-up their incredible away form so far this campaign, and now they begin a double of consecutive home encounters, including Boreham Wood on Saturday. They could further shape the start of their season after four wins, three draws and two losses, but Pennyfather knows it’s still very early to be deciding who will be the contenders based on the current standings.
“It takes a dozen to 15 games before you more or less know what’s likely to happen and you’ve got to make sure you’re one of the teams up the top and challenging,” he claimed, looking to improve on last year’s fourth-placed finish. “There’s a long way to go yet and we’ll have to compete on different types of pitches when the weather changes and the teams who have the most success are those who are able to adapt.”
Left-back Aiden Palmer is fit to play despite being substituted after receiving a number of blows during a bruising encounter with Weston-super-Mare at the weekend and he’ll be joined in contention by Ricky Modeste. The young winger has previously been carrying a knock so wasn’t risked by Pennyfather at the weekend. Other than Craig Parker, Glenn should have the rest of his squad to select from.
Angels are adjusting well to the Blue Square Bet South following their promotion via the Ryman League Premier Division play-offs last season. With just one defeat from their four away games so far they will test the Clarets on their travels, especially having secured a draw at Kent rivals Dover Athletic and a 4-0 win at Maidenhead United.
Glenn added: “We’ve had them watched and they’ve had a decent start to life at this level. I keep saying it but any game in this division is tough and this will be no different so we’ll have to show that bit of craft and ruthlessness, in front of both goals, if we’re to come out on top. Teams raise their game when they come to Melbourne and the best sides are able to deal with that extra pressure.”
