Saturday 1st October 2011, Melbourne Stadium, Kick-Off 3:00pm, FA Cup with Budweiser Second Qualifying Round.
City’s FA Cup clash with Tonbridge Angels will be “completely different” from their Blue Square Bet South encounter of a fortnight ago reckons Manager Glenn Pennyfather, who wants to guide his team into another lengthy run in the prestigious knockout competition.
Last season over 1,500 away fans travelled to see the Clarets take on Football League club Wycombe Wanderers in the Second Round Proper at Adams Park and that experience has left Pennyfather hungry for more. Though he admits facing the club who left Melbourne with a 2-2 draw recently equates to a difficult opener.
“We learned a lot from that but it will be a completely different match this time and there will be that air of a cup tie about it,” he said. “Both sides will want to win as the rewards are the same for both and we’ll both have aspirations of that dream cup run. Last year was our best performance in the competition for a long, long time and now we’ve tasted it we want it again - though we’ve been handed a tough start.”
He’ll be boosted by the news that permission has been received from parent club Colchester United for their on-loan goalkeeper Carl Pentney to play for City in the FA Cup, with the Clarets’ own Stuart Searle still battling to be fit. Otherwise the only player missing is midfielder Craig Parker, who is progressing well after injury.
Tuesday’s training took place at a local fitness centre and Glenn, who claims there will be no immediate player movements either in or out of his squad, explained: “We had a good session over at Nuffield Health and it was something different for training. They treated us well there and the players took part in pilates and gym work amongst other things. We gained a lot out of it and hopefully we can make it a more regular thing.”
