Clarets striker Cliff Akurang is confident there is sufficient talent amongst his Chelmsford City team mates to sustain a challenge for the Blue Square Bet South title this season as they look to start a winning run with victory over Dartford this Saturday, kick-off 3:00pm at Melbourne.
The former Football League forward, who has netted two goals in two games, claims the squad were disappointed not to have finished the job by beating ten-man Farnborough on Monday night, levelling twice to draw 2-2. But he knows they’ll attempt to use that as a springboard to start a surge towards the top of the table.
“I’m more than confident that, with the team we’ve got, we should be looking at winning this league,” he explained after the ‘Boro game. “I’m quite pleased that we’re starting to gel and I’m happy to learn the way that we play. It’s still quite a reasonably new team so it just takes some time sometimes but I think we’ve got the quality there - that was shown at the Havant game - it’s just getting a bit of consistency now.”
City’s next opponents, Dartford, are one of the club’s historical rivals and, Thurrock aside, the closest geographically. Therefore a derby atmosphere is expected at Melbourne as Manager Glenn Pennyfather’s side take on an in-form Darts team who have taken ten points from their first four games. That includes a 4-0 humbling of Weston-super-Mare on their travels and a decent point at Dover Athletic in midweek.
Defender Adam Tann is the only injury doubt after he hobbled off with back problems on Monday, although skipper David Rainford serves a one-match ban for his red card on the opening day. Right-back Justin Miller and winger Joe Benjamin are fit again after featuring in a friendly at Canvey Island on Wednesday which City won 6-3.
