Head Coach Glenn Pennyfather has promised any new Clarets followers “a good game of football” played “the right way” if they watch their first Chelmsford City game on ‘Non-League Day’ this Saturday as the high-flying hosts face a tough Blue Square Bet South encounter against Dorchester Town, kick-off 3:00pm.

City’s next home game coincides with the campaign, which aims to capitalise on the lack of Premier League and Championship football that day by nudging new blood through the turnstiles of their local club. Pennyfather threw his weight behind the idea after Thursday’s training session and highlighted the positives in non-league football.

“It’s very much a homely atmosphere when you go to non-league grounds – you’re always welcomed,” was just one of the benefits he listed. “Hopefully there will be some smiling faces! The people that run non-league clubs are always there to greet you and it does make a difference. It’s not impersonal like a lot of professional clubs.”

Right-back Ben Nunn (ankle) and goalkeeper James Pullen (wrist) are still around a week away from returning to the fray after injury, while Matthew Lock will be missing from the City midfield for about a fortnight after his slight hamstring tear. Otherwise, Glenn will be able to select from a fully-fit squad against Ashley Vickers’ Magpies.

Dorchester have struggled with form so far this season though Pennyfather will guard against complacency when delivering his team talk, saying: “We go all out for a win in every game and this will be no different as we don’t want to shoot ourselves in the foot. We’ve got to be up for this tough match and Ashley will have his players fired-up.”

Pennyfather also offered a further incentive for Premier League followers to make their first trip to City, adding: “We’ve played three games at home. We’ve scored eight goals and we haven’t conceded one and we’re trying to play football the right way, keeping it on the floor. Hopefully it will put bums on seats. You’re going to see a good game of football played at a decent pace and you’ll be welcomed with open arms.”
