Battling Win brings championship one step closer

Chelmsford City Under 9 Clarets

Match Report – May 2nd 2010

Chelmsford City  1     v    Writtle Minors   0

Chelmsford recorded their 15th league win in a row and 13th clean sheet to maintain there position at the top of the league. This was a crucial game as it pitted first against second and the result means the boys only require a point from their last 2 games to clinch the title.

Conditions were pretty poor as the game kicked off with rain coming down and the wind blowing which we thought we had seen the back of. Playing up the slope the boys started off well and were clearly up for the game. Chances were at a premium however as although City enjoyed the majority of possession Writtle defended well. City forced a number of corners which were excellently delivered to the back post by James Barry but were unable to get a head on. The best chances fell to Bradley Buscall and Tyrese Fairmaner but the keeper dealt with them well or they flew past the goal.

Writtle were dangerous on the break but the back 3 of Archie McClelland, Jacob Lodge and Lewis Chapman kept them to efforts from distance. Keeper Harry Gooch also came off his line well to diffuse any danger and allowed anything wide of the target to go out of play.

The second half saw changes upfront with Ellis Casey coming on and the boys again enjoyed more possession and began to carve out efforts on target with Harrison Woods excellent at breaking up attacks and then pouring forward. The new Writtle keeper excelled however and he gathered in efforts from Barry and Fairmaner with McClelland also seeing an effort go across goal narrowly missing the target.

With the game into the last minute Nathan Markham who had come on up front and had been holding the ball up well put in Fairmaner who struck well from the edge of the area and the keeper got a good hand to it but the ball fell over the line to settle the game with barely any time left to restart. Celebrations on and off the pitch were justified as all knew the importance of the result.

Overall the boys deserved their win as they had the better of the chances but there was not a lot to choose between the teams. Hopefully the boys can put in another excellent performance to get the point they need to secure the title.
